On the way towards an European training and research centre for system security of electrical grids

Permanently securing the electricity supply and the changes in framework conditions represent new preventive and curative challenges for operating personnel and managers.

Cottbus, 26/05/2011

Permanently securing the electricity supply and the changes in framework conditions - as decentralised grid feed-in or energy treated as international merchandise - represent new preventive and curative challenges for operating personnel and managers of power plants, transmission and distribution system operators and public utilities. In order to make these manageable for the grid operators in Europe, the East German transmission system operator 50Hertz Transmission GmbH has developed in collaboration with the Brandenburg University of Technology in Cottbus (BTU Cottbus) the System Trainer, in order to link research and training within an integrative approach. The GridLab System Trainer has been relocated to the subsidiary of Eurogrid International Gridlab GmbH, founded in December 2010.

Besides the use of a synthetic control area, the GridLab System Trainer allows for the implementation of real grid data of the network operators, which are projected on a user-oriented surface. This leads to the unique advantage of simulating quasi-real situation and scenarios. The potential: Not only do operators get for the first time the opportunity to take part in real trainings appropriate for the operating requirements thanks to which for example critical or crisis-prone situations can be exactly anticipated. But in addition, the supply of real network data leads to learning effects among the grid system operators even before unexpected events occur in the operational state of things.

With the system trainer the GridLab portfolio offers along with trainings and seminars, the implementation of technical assessment centres with strain and stress tests for aptitude diagnostics, a practical training for students of the GridLab SummerUniversity as well as analysis and consulting for grid operators and authorities.
