Cottbus, 09/06/2011

In the framework of his energy tour, Mr. Ralph Christophers, the Minister for Economic and European affairs of Brandenburg visited on 8th June 2011 GridLab, founded in December of last year. In close collaboration with the Brandenburg University of Technology in Cottbus (BTU Cottbus), GridLab builds the European training and research centre for the security of the electricity grids. There, the transmission system and distribution system operators have already started to train the prevention of critical grid situations, which repeatedly arise because of the lacking grid expansion and the enormous amounts of generated renewable energy.
The Minister was impressed by the market potential, the investment and also the wish of GridLab GmbH to become a European training and research centre.
Besides the theme of the further upgrade of the network, a topic of discussion was how the necessary introduction of knowledge and training standards as well as their certification can be implemented at European level. Another concern was to determine what contribution GridLab can make together with the BTU Cottbus, in order to provide the necessary accurate information for the decision-makers of municipalities and other authorities in form of trainings and seminars.
In addition, the Minister offered to actively support GridLab in its intention to create European standards in Brussels.
