GridLab supports the European Research project BEST PATHS*

The BEST PATHS project will help to overcome the challenges of integrating renewable energies into Europe’s energy mix. It aims to develop novel network technologies to increase the pan-European transmission network capacity and electricity system flexibility. The focus of the demonstrations is to deliver solutions to allow for transition from High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) lines to HVDC grids, to upgrade and repower existing Alternating Current (AC) parts of the network, and to integrate superconducting high power DC links within AC meshed network.

On behalf of the transmission system operator 50Hertz, GridLab coordinates the DEMO 4 which focusses on the repowering of HVAC (high-voltage alternating current) overhead lines aiming:

  • to research, analyze and model existing high-temperature low-sag (HTLS) conductors with a focus on ageing behaviour,
  • to determine the benefits of insulated cross-arms,
  • to validate the potentials for innovative design and field working processes, including retrofit process and LLW (life-line working),
  • to develop a prototype DLR (dynamic line rating) system based on low cost sensors allowing higher temperature operations of current line technologies.
